The Virtual CD (VCD) included on these drives can only be disabled and cannot be removed from the drive.Using a WD external drive without using WD SmartWare I confirmed this by taking a look at the support site for Western Digital, and found this support article: For all intents and purposes it is an external hard drive so you shouldn't need the software installed to be able to simply store data manually on it. It sounds like you are looking to use your WD Passport without the WD SmartWare software.
